He was twenty-six, on his way back from Jiaozhi — the Tang empire's southernmost province, which is to say northern Vietnam — where he had gone to see his father. His name was Wang Bo, and he had already written what is probably the most famous piece of parallel prose in the Chinese language. The people here built him a grave and a temple, carved statues of the poet and of his father Wang Fuzhi, and turned the spot into somewhere scholars from Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh went to pray. A drowned foreigner became a local patron of letters.]]></description>
