This is the Llobregat Delta, one of the most improbable wildlife refuges in Europe: a mosaic of marsh, dune and pine that has held its ground where the Llobregat river spills into the Mediterranean, hemmed on every side by the runways of El Prat airport, the cranes of the Port of Barcelona, and the farms and suburbs of a metropolis of millions. Jets and shearwaters share the same patch of coast.
