Montseny Massif: Introduction

Photo credit Àlex, CC BY-SA 3.0. Climb Montseny from the bottom and you pass through several worlds. The lower slopes are Mediterranean, all holm oak and warm scrub; higher up the land turns to shady beech and fir forest; and near the summits, more than 1,700 meters above the sea, it opens into cool grassland that feels almost alpine. In the space of a single ascent, the mountain stacks the climates of half a continent. That compression of habitats, packed into a range within sight of Barcelona, is why UNESCO made it a biosphere reserve, and why a salamander that lives nowhere else on Earth still survives in its cold streams. The range is the great green wall on Barcelona's northern horizon.
