Between the crowded fortress town of Peníscola to the north and the beach apartments of Alcossebre to the south lies a stretch of the Costa del Azahar that was never built over: twelve kilometres of mountainside falling straight into the Mediterranean in cliffs, coves and rocky terraces. Spain protected it as a natural park in 2002, and the boundary was drawn deliberately to leave the developed ends outside, fencing off the wild middle from the sprawl that had claimed the shore on either side.]]></description>
