There are places whose whole story is one of quiet subtraction. In the mountains where the Valencian Community meets Aragon and Catalonia, seven small villages share a name and a fate: the Tinença de Benifassà, a historical district that has been emptying for half a century. Castell de Cabres, la Pobla de Benifassà, el Bellestar, el Boixar, Coratxà, Fredes, Bel. Say them slowly, because there are fewer people left to say them than there once were. This is one of the loneliest and most beautiful corners of eastern Spain.
